Reza Bazaar The Oldest Market in Mashhad

Reza Bazaar The Oldest Market in Mashhad

History of Reza Bazaar

In the past, there was no large and complete market around the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza, and most of the markets and shops in Mashhad were scattered. Therefore, in 1975, the construction of a large market near the shrine, specifically for buying souvenirs and catering to pilgrims, was approved by the parliament.

A large plot of land was designated for the construction of Reza Bazaar, and the governor of Khorasan at the time ordered the demolition of old shops and buildings on this land (the current area of Reza Bazaar). The bazaar was built within 11 months in 1975, and each merchant was assigned a shop. It was officially opened in 1976, becoming the main market close to the shrine.

Architecture of Reza Bazaar

Reza Bazaar features traditional Iranian-Islamic architecture. The well-known architect of that time, Dariush Borbor, designed the market with inspiration from old Iranian bazaars, making it a covered two-story structure.

This beautiful historical bazaar stretches for about one kilometer in length. It has identical decorative facades and arched entrances on both sides, featuring a step-like design.

Inside, Reza Bazaar consists of 17 cross-sections and 11 caravanserais. Beautiful brickwork was used to divide the bazaar into six sections, and each section is separated by an octagonal design.

Ground Floor of Reza Bazaar

The ground floor of Mashhad’s largest covered market features numerous stalls and shops offering a variety of goods and products. Visitors and pilgrims can find a wide range of souvenirs from Mashhad, including clothing, jewelry, gold, silver, precious rings, saffron, dried fruits, toys, spices, and more.

First Floor of Reza Bazaar

This floor runs parallel to the ground floor and extends the length of the bazaar. It can be accessed through 12 side corridors located in six octagonal sections. The first floor is home to workshops specializing in stone carving, jewelry making, turquoise cutting, and handicrafts, offering a unique charm to visitors.

How to Get There from Hotel Refah

Reza Bazaar is located near the Holy Shrine, between Beyt al-Moqaddas Square and 17 Shahrivar Square. Its convenient location makes it easily accessible from "Hotel Refah." Pilgrims can reach the bazaar with a short walk, without the need for any transportation. From the hotel, simply head to the main entrance at Water Square (Beyt al-Moqaddas Square), which serves as the primary entrance to the bazaar.

To get there, upon exiting Hotel Refah, turn right and head to Sheikh Tousi 11 entrance. There, you will see the walls of "Reza Bazaar." Then, turn left and walk towards Water Square to reach the bazaar’s entrance.
